Abstract

Collection documents Perkins's career in the textile industry. Includes sales books, correspondence, agreements and contracts, design journals and notebooks, 1906-1932, from his work as a cotton broker for Stephen M. Weld & Co. and his study at the New Bedford Textile School; and executive correspondence, 1918-1921, of the Manhasset Manufacturing Co. Also contains records, 1924-1938, of the Perkins-Strongman Corp., including organizational and administrative, executive, financial, purchasing, sales, labor, and production records, as well as records of Putnam Looms and the Edgewood Co., both subsidiaries of Perkins-Strongman, and folder of correspondence, 1930-34, of the Putnam Curtain Co. Also contains Perkins's working files, 1911-1953, the majority of which are from Pilgrim Mills and Queen City Cotton as well as administrative, executive, financial, purchasing, etc., records of Pilgrim Mills, 1911-1942; Queen City Cotton, 1917-1943; and Naushon Mills, 1927, 1941. Materials related to labor and the General Textile Strike of 1934 can be found throughout the papers. Some working papers of Perkins's father, John A. Perkins, are also available.

Born in 1888 in Calais, Me., Perkins, like his father John A. Perkins, had a long and successful career in the textile industry. As a young man, he worked in several New England mills and completed a two year night program at the New Bedford Textile School in New Bedford, Mass. From 1915-25, he worked in New Bedford as a cotton broker and agent at Stephen M. Weld & Co. In 1924, Perkins and John B.
